3D & 4D Ultrasound Experience at Tiny Hearts 3D Ultrasound Studio

Technology and technological advancements never fail to surprise me. The world has modernized from telegrams to touch screen smartphones. In this age of scientific advancements, ultrasounds are another fascinating modern invention. Being pregnant comes with this most exciting time when I look forward to the ultrasound appointments as it gives me an opportunity to look at my baby on the screen and get a picture or two! All the regular appointments provide a 2-dimensional (2D) view of the baby. But while I was pregnant with my son, I had come across private ultrasound clinics that offer 3/4/5-dimensional (3D/4D/5D), ultrasound experience. As much as I wanted to do it, I couldn’t get it done. So when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I was on it from the beginning.

The wait was finally over when I got to see her on the big screen in 3D. I am still reeling through the beautiful moments of watching my baby on the screen. It was surreal and mesmerizing. I couldn’t believe my eyes and the level of detail I saw. Thanks to Tiny Hearts 3D Ultrasound Studio for offering me this amazing opportunity at the Baby Show! They offered mini sessions to view my baby, gave us the printouts (she gave additional prints to my son of the picture he wanted, he was so over the moon!) of the baby pictures, and also put all the pictures on a flash drive as a keepsake.

What are these 2D/3D/4D/5D Ultrasounds?

The usual or routine growth ultrasounds are performed at the health clinics and are intended to check the fetal growth and any other abnormalities during pregnancy. However, in Canada, you can schedule exciting 3D and 4D ultrasounds at private clinics. Be informed that these ultrasounds are for leisure only to watch your baby and the technologist does not perform any medical scans. I did not know what the difference between this 2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D was, so I asked the technician to help me understand. She simplified them for me as below:

  • 2D – where you see the baby on screen (it is the standard ultrasound picture of the baby and black & white we normally see)
  • 3D – adds colors to the image and allows you to see the baby’s features in detail including eyes, nose, fingers, toes, as well as hair (depending on how many weeks you are when having the scan)
  • 4D – these basically add motion to the scan (when you view the baby movements either in 2D or 3D it is actually 4D). It can also be called the video scans
  • 5D – gives high-resolution images (adds high resolution to 3D images)
